Notes for James Reed* (Spouse 1)
Used middle name “Reed.”

James Reed Low, known as Reed, was born and raised at Ottawa. Although an only child, he was raised in a household with an extended family. Three aunts on his mother's side lived with the family for many years. His parents also raised five of his mother's nephews and nieces. In the late 1930's, his grandmother (ID=102) was with the family.

Reed completed grade 12 at Glebe Collegiate in Ottawa about 1934. While attending this high school, he was part of a small orchestra, in which he played the piano. He became head of this orchestra, and they played at various functions in the Ottawa area.

Within a month of his marriage to Ethel Emily Flinn on 20 May 1935, Reed joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He started his career at the lowest rank - Air Crewman, and received his basic training at Camp Borden. He received his commission early in the war, and retired as Wing Commander in 1968.

While in the Air Force, Reed and his family were transferred every few years. Early in the war, the family was at Ottawa, but Reed had to spend a lot of time in Montreal. About 1942-44, the family was in Philadelphia, USA, where he was a liason Supply Officer. They were at Montreal in 1945-46, Toronto in 1946-48, Edmonton 1948-51, Dayton (Wright-Patterson AFB) USA in 1951-54, Ottawa again 1954-57, Toronto again (RCAF Staff College) 1957-58,
Montreal again 1958-1964, and finally Ottawa from 1964, where he retired in 1968.

For most of his RCAF career, Reed was a Supply Clerk, then Supply Officer. From 1964 to 1967, he was logistics and tour administative officer for the Canadian Armed Forces Tattoo, which was presented across Canada during the country's centennial celebrations of 1967.

Reed died, by suicide, on 10 December 1970 at Ottawa.
