Transcript directly from information obtained by me (James W.A. Low, ID-329) from my grandmother (Ethel Emily “Hettie” Gardner, ID=507) in 1959:
"William James Gardner was born on January 16, 1859 in Warwick, England and raised there.  He left school when he was about 14 and worked with his father as a gardener.  Soon he joined the navy.  In 1884 he married Harriet Drucilla Harris while he was on leave when he was not permitted to.  He left the navy in 1887 after ten year service because of ill health.  They moved to Birmingham where he had a dairy for a short time.  He went bankrupt, however, because he was too kind-hearted and often gave milk away.  Then he worked at the chemical works in Birmingham until his death on December 10, 1897 from his third case of pneumonia.
"His wife was born in Warwick on November 10, 1864 and was a tailoress for her father.  She died February 17, 1934 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.  She was married to Frederick Buckingham at the time of her death."
