Notes for Beatrix of Portugal de (Spouse 1)
Some records give her name “Beatrice.” Some records show her birth as 1403, but this would conflict with her first marriage, as being too young.

There appears to be some confusion over the marriage of Thomas Fettiplace and Beatrix, or Beatrice. It appears Beatrix was married three times, but there may have been two women with the same name, and another Beatrice married one or another of the husbands indicated. The “Visitation of Berkshire 1566” (quoted below) indicates Sir Thomas Fettiplace married Beatrice who was a daughter of the King of Portugal, but incorrectly names a king who reigned much earlier, and refers to the grandson as son.

“Fettiplace of East Shefford Heralds' Visitation of Berkshire, 1566
“Sir Thomas Fettiplace of East Shefford in the county of Berkshire, knight, married the Lady Beatrice, Countess of Shrewsbury, and daughter to Alphonso, King of Portugal and had issue, Richard, his eldest son ex relacone Robert Yate of Oxford, gentleman.
“Richard Fettiplace of East Shefford aforesaid, esquire, married Elizabeth the daughter and heir of William Bessels of Besselsleigh in the county of Berkshire, esquire, and by her had issue, John, his eldest son; Edward, second son; Anthony, third son; John Fettiplace, fourth son; and Thomas Fettiplace, fifth son; Susan married to ..... of Kingston in the county of Gloucestershire, esquire; Jane married to John Moore of Haddon in the county of Oxfordshire, esquire; Anne married to Edward Purefoy of Shalstone in the county of Buckinghamshire, esquire; Dorothy married to ..... Cutterington of ..... in the county of .....; Eleanor, a nun at Sion; Elizabeth, a nun at Amesbury.”

The 1623 Visitation of Berkshire shows Thomas Fettiplace of Shefford married to Beatrix 'filia Johannis regis Portugaliae', in her third marriage. It shows her first husband as Thomas, Earl of Arundel, and her second as Gilbert, lord Talbot.

There is much more information available in records, much of which can be found on the internet. Although it cannot be proved beyond a doubt, the evidence strongly suggests Beatrix, daughter of King John of Portugal is the same Beatrix who married Thomas Fettiplace. It appears probable that one of the other husbands listed with Beatrix here may, in fact, have been married to another Beatrice.
