Rolf, a Viking, came to the land of the West Franks, part of the remainder of Charlemagne's empire, with an offer to defend it against other Vikings, in return for a title. He became the Duke of Normandy about 911, which was the name give for his men, the “North men.” Part of the deal was that he and his followers would convert to Christianity. The name “Norman” came from Normandy.
