HAMILTON — Kenton R. Bagley, 96, died December 4, 2004 at his residence. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (Newborg) Bagley.
Born in Troy, ME, in 1908, he attended Unity High School, Unity, ME, and graduated from Bates College in 1930. He was a resident of North Beverly and Hamilton since 1931. Ken was married for 60 years to Elouise (Shibles) Bagley who pre-deceased him in 1992. He married Elizabeth Newborg in 1995 at which time he relocated from North Beverly to Hamilton.
Mr. Bagley worked for Sylvania’s incandescent lamp division in Salem, MA, as a Product Engineering Supervisor for 40 years, retiring in 1973. He continued to consult internationally for Sylvania post-retirement in Monterrey, Mexico, and Tienen, Belgium, until 1978 overseeing the construction and start-up of two new lamp factories. He was the holder of multiple lamp-related patents.
He was an active member of the Second Congregational Church in Beverly for over 65 years, serving as Deacon, Moderator, and held numerous committee positions. He served locally for the Civil Defense during WWII and was active in Boy Scout leadership.
Widely known for his downhill skiing activities until age 88, Kenton taught the sport to his children and grandchildren. Kenton also enjoyed swimming, woodworking, chair caning, house remodeling, traveling in Maine and visiting friends and relatives in many states.
In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Frederic and Grace Bagley of Hamden, ME; Wendell and Peg Bagley of Hudson, FL; and a sister, Bette Hilton of Litchfield, ME. From his first marriage to Elouise he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jo-Anne and David Truslow of Pride’s Crossing; and a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Elaine Bagley, of Greenfield. He is survived by five grandchildren: Christopher Truslow and his wife, Sandra; Leigh Scharfe and her husband, Alan; Jessica Trapotsis and her husband, Arthur; Ryan Bagley, and Jenna Hrinda and her husband, M. Sean; and seven great-grandchildren: Alex and Nina Truslow; Christopher Hutchinson; Rebekah and Henry Scharfe; and Megan and Lucas Hrinda. From his marriage to Elizabeth he is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law; Susan and Mark Chase of LaPlata, MD; Kathy and Kevin Kulakowski of Sarasota, FL; and Lisa and Glenn Baylis of Bedford; and six grandchildren: Scott and Timothy Chase, Kyle Kulakowski, Kendra Chappell, and Heather and Craig Baylis.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Lawrence, and a sister, Ruth, and by his youngest son, William.
A memorial service will be Saturday, December 11, 2004 in the Second Congregational Church, 35 Conant St., Beverly, MA at 2 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
