In 1834, Abraham Tanner was convicted of a petty crime at Berkeley, and the report is as follows:
“Abraham Tanner of Stone, Berkeley, tailor and shopkeeper
Possessing five non-standard weights
W Davies, DD, JP and Rev J H Dunsford, JP at a Petty Sessions held at Berkeley, for the upper division of Berkeley Hundred.
Fined 9/6 and 5/- costs.
Crime committed 8 October 1834
54/A/22
11 November 1834”

In 1841 address was Stone, Berkeley, Stone, Registration District of Thornbury.
Stone is a parish within Berkeley.

Also resident in the household in 1841 was Mary Cove, age 13, Domesic Servant.

This family lived in the parish where the Jenner family lived, Edward Jenner being the inventor of the smallpox vaccination. Of interest is the comment in the parish register is the following:
“In the Spring of the Year 1795 three hundred and nine Persons were inoculated with the Small Pox in the Town of Berkeley by Henry and George Jenner all of which recovered. William Davies Curate.”

It is possible the Tanner family were among the first people to receive the smallpox vaccination.
